Meet the Hag: Annie

Hag: Annie Riordan

Location: Providence, RI

What will you be bringing to H.A.G.?
If it’s horror, I’ll read it, watch it, eat it, or fuck it. Then I’ll tell you about it in the most graphic, immature, and grossest TMI way I possibly can.

When did you realize you are a HAG?
In the year 1973. I was still sucking my thumb and couldn’t use the potty by myself, but dammit, I saw a television commercial for a brand-new movie called “The Exorcist” and I knew I had to see it.

With which horror villain do you feel the strongest connection?
Gonna have to go with Jason Voorhees. We were both bullied as children, and we both grew up to be hardcore killing machines. He uses a machete, I use a keyboard, po-TAY-toe, po-TAH-toe…

Which horror subgenre is your favorite?
Probably demonic possession films, because there are so few really good ones.

Is there a horror icon you want to meet?
I’m actively stalking Kane Hodder, but he’s reached the maximum number of friends he can have on FB, goddammit.

What scares you?
Baby showers, broccoli, and underwire bras.

What movie/TV show/book went too far for you?
Poppy Z. Brite’s book Exquisite Corpse actually unsettled me so badly I had to put it aside several times. It took me about three months to finish it, and it was brilliant, but it was also grim and nauseating and spectacularly unpleasant…and I consider that a complimentary review. As far as movies go, I think the sickest thing I’ve ever seen was a film called The Butcher – a pseudo-snuff Asian film with no plot, just raw, cold depravity. I can’t imagine anyone who isn’t a serial killer actually enjoying a film like that.

What is your most anticipated horror movie?
Anything not directed by James Wan.

What horror-genre book are you currently reading?
I’m currently re-reading Justin Evans The Good & Happy Child which – along with Tananarive Due’s The Good House – is a rare example of a story of demonic possession done perfectly.
